Farm Bill about to set US back 100 years!
Much has been said in animal circles of the 2013 Farm Bill ( H.R. 2642) and the infamous 'King Amendment' (Sec. 11312 of the House-passed Farm Bill, read it here)! The House of Representatives has already passed the bill that included the aforementioned amendment. The Senate ( S. 954) passed a version that DID NOT include such amendment and the entire bill is now in House Senate Conference. Whatever comes out of the conference will most likely become law of the land!
Mr. King (R, IA) is a well known adversary to the animal cause and he has proven his lack of compassion by sneaking into the voluminous 2013 Farm Bill an innocent sounding amendment that will turn back the clock ONE HUNDRED YEARS! Cloaked as 'enhancing interstate commerce', it basically invalidates state and local laws throughout the nation that have anything to do with the production of animal products. In short it states 'if a state has stringent requirements for producing anything animal i.e. milk, eggs etc., those requirements do not apply to any outside state that wants to export those products into the state with stringent rules'.
Since having larger cages, feeding them more often, giving animals medical care etc. etc. are all cost driving actions, the new law will thus put the local producer at a pricing disadvantage vs the scummy states, like Iowa, that will now be allowed to import foodstuff. What will happen then? The strict requirement states will have a choice, either drop their compassionate animal laws or allow their local farmers to go bankrupt! Literally hundreds or even thousands of state and local ordinances will be overturned. Millions of hours of animal advocates efforts and money will be wiped out with ONE SENTENCE.
Take action now, the House Senate conference is starting work the week of 10/20/2013 and typically a final bill will emerge in a few weeks hence. Our best chance to kill the notorious King Amendment is via the Senate Conferees. Below is a list of those Senators, please call them, fax them, throw your ire and anger at them but make them stop this horrific Amendment from being included in the final Farm Bill. Promise them a primary challenge from the ANIMAL ADVOCATES if they vote to include the King Amendment!
